T he estimated U.S. output of construction aggregates pro- duced and shipped for consumption in the first quarter of 2018 was 422 million metric tons (Mt), a slight increase compared with that of the same period of 2017, according to Jason Willett, crushed stone commodity specialist for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The estimated annual output produced for consumption in 2017 was 2.26 billion metric tons (Gt), a slight increase com- pared with the annual output for 2016. The estimated production-for-consumption of construction aggregates in the first quarter of 2018 decreased in six of the nine geographic divisions compared with that sold or used in the first quarter of 2017. The largest increase in percentages was recorded in the Pacific and Mountain divisions. Production-for-consumption decreased in 23 of the 40 states that were estimated. The five leading states were, in descending order of produc- tion-for-consumption, Texas, California, Florida, Georgia and Arizona. Their combined total production-for-consumption was 143 Mt and increased by 9 percent when compared with that of the same period of 2017. An estimated 256 Mt of crushed stone was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the first quarter of 2018, a slight decrease compared with that of the same period of 2017. The estimated annual output produced for consumption in 2017 was 1.35 Gt, a slight decrease compared with that of 2016. The estimated production-for-consumption of crushed stone in the first quarter of 2018 decreased in six of the nine geo- graphic divisions compared with that sold or used in the first quarter of 2017. Production-for-consumption decreased in 29 of the 44 states for which estimates were made. The five leading states were, in descending order of produc- tion-for-consumption, Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. The estimated U.S. output of construction sand and gravel produced and shipped for consumption in the first quarter of 2018 was 165 Mt, an increase of 7 percent compared with that of the same period of 2017. The estimated annual output produced for consumption in 2017 was 905 Mt, a slight increase compared with the annual output for 2016. The estimated production-for-consumption of construction sand and gravel in the first quarter of 2018 decreased from that of first quarter 2017 in four of the nine geographic divi- sions. Production-for-consumption increased in 22 of the 44 states for which estimates were made. The five leading states were, in descending order of produc- tion-for-consumption, Texas, California, Arizona, Washington and Florida. The above estimates are based on information reported to the USGS on its quarterly sample survey by construction aggre- gates producers.
