"The previous ownership produced 89 percent of its product for hydraulic fracturing, and when the market went south a few years ago, it really impacted their business. We still produce frac sand but we are diversifying our products to more strongly service industrial sand markets." After screening, a Masaba conveying system sends finished product to seven storage silos. All of the sand products, whether industrial or frac, are dried using a 75-tph Stark air dryer. Material is dried between 180 and 230 degrees F. Contined on page 26 Ohio Basic Minerals President Carey Carlson has a vast amount of industry experience. He began his career in Florida with Ideal Cement and Holcim. He also worked for a barging and water-distribution company, Independent Aggregates. Seeking an opportunity to strike out on his own, he then started Metro Ready Mix in the Tampa market, which he grew into a local success story over nine years. He sold his company to Titan America in 2005. Carlson also worked for Plum Creek Timber, and for Lafarge in its Caribbean markets. In 2017 he once again struck out on his own, buying Ohio Basic Minerals. Now he is working to diversify the company's product range and grow its market penetration. "We are an industrial sand operation," he said. "Our location is idea for the market, both for industrial sand and frac sand. We are in a very good area.
