IN THE KNOW Vulcan Hosts Chinese Delegation The quarry recently welcomed visitors from China's Liaon‐ ing province, who came to the McCook Quarry to learn more about industry‐leading best practices for aggregates mining and production. The delegation of Chinese government officials have been at‐ tending lectures, field studies and programs developed by the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), and visited the Mc‐ Cook Quarry for a first‐hand look how Vulcan deploys tech‐ nology and engineering to produce high‐quality construction aggregates in a safe and socially responsible manner. PRODUCER NEWS Jason Schlee, Vulcan safety supervisor, explained to the del‐ egates that Vulcan's safety culture is "employee driven" and is based on employee involvement. He told them that by working together, employees can develop solutions to sus‐ tain an injury‐free environment. "I like to consider it a humanitarian effort," said Carl Vizza, director of professional learning programs at IIT. "It's im‐ portant to lead by example, because in their country, re‐ form will have to come from within." FAST FACT In any given year, Vulcan Materials Co.'s McCook Quarry – one of the largest limestone operations in North America – hosts hundreds of scouts, community leaders, students and organizations who visit the quarry to learn more about Earth Sciences, and the engineering and technology used to manufacture construction materials that go into the build‐ ing and maintenance of roads, infrastructure, homes and businesses in the Chicago area. Vulcan Materials' McCook Quarry recently welcomed visitors from China's Liaoning province. "Our philosophy at Vulcan has always been to breed a cul‐ ture of safety," said Kevin Cox, plant manager, McCook Quarry, a quarry honored for its award‐winning safety and community relations programs. "For us, safety is more than a priority; it's an element of our business that informs everything we do, every day." "This is a very important initiative for the Chinese people," said Vizza. "It's clear they're interested in safety, and we're happy to help usher in those practices for them." "Today was a great opportunity to share some of what we do," said Cox. "It's been a privilege for our team to be recog‐ nized by IIT and the Chinese officials." Holcim (Canada) Inc. Celebrates Employee Volunteer Effort FAST FACT Holcim (Canada) Inc. celebrated the success of its To‐ gether for Communities (TFC) employee volunteer effort through a series of special photo exhibition events docu‐ menting the year‐long initiative. Holcim (Canada) celebrated the success of its Together for Communities employee volunteer effort with special events. As part of a larger global movement in honor of parent company Holcim Ltd.'s centennial in 2012, the initiative encouraged all 3,000 Holcim Canada employees to give back to the communities where they live and work. Throughout the year, employees captured images of their volunteer acts, the engaging results of which form the content of the photo exhibitions, culminating in a special event today, to coincide with International Vol‐ unteer Day 2012. Recently, in Montreal, Quebec, employees from Holcim 12 ROCKproducts • JANUARY 2013 Canada operations in Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces, including Demix Agrégats, Demix Béton and Demix Con‐ struction, attended a private reception at La TOHU Per‐ formance Centre. On display were images taken by Holcim Canada employees of their experiences participating in the Together for Communities initiative. The internationally acclaimed Voxapella Choir – volun‐ teers themselves – also gave a performance. In addition to community stakeholders, the event was attended by exec‐ utive and senior Holcim Canada management, as they honored employees of the company that contributed to the initiative. Over the course of the year, Holcim's Quebec and Atlantic region engaged with more than 90 different organizations, which benefited from the TFC initiative. Nancy Gagnon, manager of Maison Jacques Ferron, a shel‐ ter for people with serious mental health difficulties, said, "We are very lucky and spoiled to benefit from the ex‐ traordinary generosity and precious help of Holcim Canada's employees. With the Together for Communities initiative this year, Holcim Canada employees have volun‐ teered for more than 1,000 hours to help us renovate the center. We are really thankful." www.rockproducts.com
