Page 66 of 95 ROCK products • May 2019 • 65 December Cement Shipments Drop Slightly Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in December 2018 were 6.2 million metric tons (Mt), a slight decrease from shipments in December 2017, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments, including imports, for the full year totaled 97.7 Mt, an increase of 2.3% from those in 2017. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in December 2018 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and New York) received 44% of the December shipments. Masonry cement shipments totaled 150,000 metric tons in December 2018, down by 7.3% from those in December 2017. For the full year, shipments totaled 2.4 Mt, essen- tially unchanged from those in 2017. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in December 2018 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, Georgia and North Carolina; these states received 61% of the December shipments. Clinker production totaled 6.5 Mt in December 2018, a slight decrease from the output (excluding Puerto Rico) in December 2017. For the full year, production was 77.0 Mt, essentially unchanged from that in 2017. The leading clin- ker-producing states in December 2018 were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Alabama. Redfern to Head Lafarge's Eastern Canada Operations Lafarge Canada Inc. announced the appointment of David Redfern as chief executive officer of its Eastern Canada operations. With 25-plus years in construction materials, he succeeds Bruno Roux and transitions from the role of product line general manager for Western Canada Aggre- gates and the Greater Vancouver area. "David's success in our Vancouver market has been focused on commercial growth and operational excellence," said René Thibault, LafargeHolcim Group executive committee member and region head, North America. "Having started his career in logistics and sales roles, I am confident he will bring strong leadership to the organization, and drive strong growth and results in our Eastern Canada business." Redfern joined LafargeHolcim in 1999 and has held numer- ous roles of increasing responsibility throughout Canada and France. He received his Bachelor of Political Science degree from Queen's University, and also holds certificates of achievement from Duke University, INSEAD and the Uni- versity of Toronto. PCA Announces E&E Awards Winners The Portland Cement Association (PCA) announced the win- ners of the 2019 Energy and Environment (E&E) Awards, recognizing outstanding environmental and community relations efforts that go above and beyond what is required. Submissions from plants across the U.S. were evaluated and recognized for environmental efforts completed in 2018. "The awards highlight how America's cement manufactur- ers are focused on sustainably producing the highest quality product with minimal environmental footprint," said PCA President and CEO Michael Ireland. "The companies selected for these environmental accolades demonstrate a strong culture of innovation that result in energy efficiency and sustainable manufacturing practices."
