MSHA WATCH MSHA reports that on June 13, 2013, a 50‐year‐old mechanic with 15 years of experience was killed at a stone operation. He was operating a 35‐ton articulated haul truck down a haul road. The truck went out of control and hit a berm, propelling it in the air. The truck came to a stop with the bed overturned and the cab upright. The victim was ejected from the truck. USGS STATS According to the USGS, an estimated 211 million metric tons of crushed stone was produced and shipped for consumption in the United States in the first quarter of 2013, a decrease of 4 percent compared with that of the same period of 2012. The estimated annual output produced for consumption in 2012 was 1.16 billion metric tons, flat compared with the reported annual output for 2011. ECONOMIC INDICATORS New construction starts in May advanced 5 percent from the previous month, according to McGraw Hill Construction, a division of McGraw Hill Financial. Much of the upward lift came from nonresidential building, which registered moderate growth for the second month in a row after its sluggish performance at the outset of 2013. Smaller gains in May were reported for housing and nonbuilding construction (public works and elec‐ tric utilities). Highway and bridge construction bounced back 11 percent. Bright spots in the growth of airport, rail, transit, port and waterway construction have been overshadowed by a 6 percent decline in the real value of highway pavement work, according to the latest American Road & Transportation Builders Association analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data. Contractors completed $8.4 billion in pavement construction work between January and April 2013, compared to $8.9 billion during the same time period in 2012. In May, the estimated seasonally adjusted annual rate of public construc‐ tion spending was $269.5 billion, 1.8 percent (±3.0 percent) above the revised April estimate of $264.7 billion. Educational construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $60.4 billion, 0.4 percent (±3.5 percent) above the revised April estimate of $60.1 billion. Highway construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $78.3 billion, 0.8 percent (±9.5 percent) above the revised April estimate of $77.7 billion. www.rockproducts.com ENERGY n WTI CRUDE OIL FUTURES PRICE 6/28/2013: $96.56/bbl, up $2.87 from week earlier; up $18.87 from year earlier. n NATURAL GAS FUTURES PRICE 6/28/2013: $3.565/mmBtu, down $0.206 from week earlier; up $0.843 from year earlier. n WEEKLY COAL PRODUCTION 6/22/2013: 19.430 million tons, down 0.309 million tons from week earlier; down 0.168 million tons from year earlier. n NATURAL GAS INVENTORIES 6/21/2013: 2,533 Bcf, up 95 Bcf from week earlier; down 522 Bcf from year earlier. n CRUDE OIL INVENTORIES 6/28/2013: 394.1 mmbbl, up 0.0 mmbbl from week earlier; up 7.0 mmbbl from year earlier.
