IN THE KNOW NSSGA Names New President A S S O C I AT I O N N E W S The National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA) announced that veteran trade association executive Michael W. Johnson will serve as the group's next president and CEO, ef‐ fective Aug. 1. He succeeds R. A. "Gus" Edwards, III, who is retiring after more than 16 years with NSSGA. Johnson is currently the executive vice president and chief advocacy of‐ ficer of the National Beer Whole‐ salers Association. Since joining NBWA in 2006, Johnson's leadership has been instrumental in developing and advancing the association's strategic, member‐focused advocacy agenda, which has resulted in achiev‐ ing public policy objectives and rein‐ vigorating membership programs. FAST FACT C. Howard Nye, chairman of the NSSGA Board of Directors and president and CEO of Martin Marietta Materials, Raleigh, N.C., said, "NSSGA is very for‐ tunate to have Mike Johnson coming on board at this critical time. He's a proven leader with a wealth of experi‐ ence that will serve our membership well as the aggregates industry negoti‐ ates its way through a sluggish na‐ tional economy and the upcoming surface transportation program reau‐ thorization. The addition of Mike John‐ son to an already excellent NSSGA staff will strengthen its ability to pursue the membership's objectives. Johnson is familiar with the construc‐ tion industry, having spent nearly five years with the National Associa‐ tion of Home Builders. Recognized as a dedicated advocate, effective communicator and relation‐ ship builder, Johnson was named a "Leading Association Lobbyist" in 2012 and a "Young and Aspiring As‐ sociation Executive" in 2007 by Asso‐ ciation TRENDS magazine. Johnson holds a bachelor's degree in political science and journalism from the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Companies Enter Sand and Gravel Joint Venture PRODUCER NEWS JPX Global Inc. entered into a joint venture agreement with CGrowth Capital Inc. to extract and sell sand and gravel from the 15‐acre Chewelah Community Pit lo‐ cated near Colville, Wash. FAST FACT The initial contract is for the removal of 49,900 cu. yd. of material with a potential gross value exceeding $640,000. The company is working with CGrowth and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to increase the quantity of mate‐ rial to be extracted and sold to 2 million cu. yd. over a five‐ year period. Venture will extract and sell sand and gravel from the 15-acre Chewelah Community Pit located near Colville, Wash. The contract calls for total payments of $350,000 in work‐ 6 ROCKproducts • JULY 2013 ing capital to the project within the next 30 days. The com‐ pany has paid $50,000 toward the initial startup expenses. CGrowth is obligated to oversee and provide operational, on‐site and sales support in respect to the Chewelah Com‐ munity Pit operation. Chief Executive Officer Jim Foran stated, "We are excited about this division of the company and the opportunity to sell sand and gravel to the regional construction industry, and will be able to announce further developments with this project as the materials are extracted from the Chewe‐ lah Community Pit and sold to regional customers."
