Cement production accounts for 5 per‐ cent of global CO 2 emissions and is the second most consumed substance on earth after water. In June 2013, ITRI signed a patent licensing and technol‐ ogy transfer agreement with Taiwan Cement Co., Ltd. to build the world's largest calcium looping pilot plant where 1 tonne of carbon will be cap‐ tured per hour. "Carbon capture has been around for a while, but has never taken off due to its high costs. ITRI's HECLOT has solved Taiwan Cement's and the ce‐ ment industry's CO 2 emissions prob‐ lem and has reduced the carbon capture cost substantially," said Les‐ ley Koo, chairman, board of directors and supervisor at Taiwan Cement. In the future, HECLOT will be available for licensing to cement manufacturers and fossil‐fuel power plants world‐ wide. Industrial Technology Research In- stitute, www.itri.org.tw/award/eng Cement manufacturers and power plants that are required to comply with the latest U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations can now rely on enhanced mercury calibrators to speed compliance with the new regulatory require‐ ments of individual facilities. The Thermo Scientific High‐Level Model 81iH and Low‐Level Model 81iL Mercury Calibrators fully integrate with the Thermo Scientific Mercury Freedom System, enhancing the capa‐ bilities currently provided in the stan‐ dard Thermo Scientific Model 81i calibrator. The new models give opera‐ tors the flexibility to choose multiple sampling ranges, which provide a wider range of mercury outputs. The High Level Model 81iH calibrator is designed for applications measuring high levels of mercury, intended to help cement manufacturers comply with EPA's Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) standards. Mer‐ cury emissions can vary depending on the operating condition of the equip‐ ment in cement kilns, and the High‐ Level Model 81iH calibrator allows the mercury system to conduct span checks and calibrations across a large dynamic range. The Low‐Level 81iL calibrator meas‐ ures low levels of mercury and provides added flexibility to help power plants comply with EPA's Utility Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS). The emis‐ sion limit for power plants per the MATS rule is close to the lower end of the standard Model 81i range, and the Low‐Level Model 81iL calibrator is specifically designed to maximize per‐ formance at lower ranges. Facilities must comply with MACT and MATS re‐ quirements in 2015. "Deadlines for MACT and MATS com‐ pliance are looming, and many facilities may need to take action immediately," said Brent LeClaire, product line man‐ ager, environmental and process mon‐ itoring for Thermo Fisher Scientific. "We enhanced the calibrators for the Mercury Freedom System to enable our customers to prepare quickly and flex‐ ibly for the 2015 deadlines." The Thermo Scientific High‐Level Model 81iH and Low‐Level Model 81iL Mercury Calibrators also offer: a vapor generator to allow calibration of the in‐ strument directly, as well as calibration through the extraction probe; Ethernet connectivity to provide efficient remote access for downloading data from the instrument; ability to perform diagnos‐ tic calibrations directly to the analyzer and probe; National Institute of Stan‐ dards and Technology (NIST) traceabil‐ ity; and additional benefits of the iSeries platform, including flexible com‐ munications, ease of service and a sim‐ plified interface.
