FEATURE MINEXPO 2012 PREVIEW LAS VEGAS HOSTS THE WORLD'S LARGEST EXPOSITION FOR MINING, AGGREGATES AND MINERAL PROCESSING. Mark S. Kuhar, Steve Fiscor and Gina Tverdak-Slattery very four years, the U.S. Na‐ tional Mining Association (NMA) holds MINExpo Interna‐ tional, the world's largest exposition for the mining and mineral process‐ ing sectors. The event will take place Sept. 24‐26, 2012, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. As far as exhibit space, the show is currently sold out. More than 1,800 companies will dis‐ play equipment and discuss services on more than 850,000 sq. ft. of exhi‐ bition space; in 2008, 1,224 ex‐ hibitors occupied 600,000 sq. ft. E To accommodate all of the new com‐ panies pursuing the mining business, the NMA contracted for more space in the South Hall. "This is the first time we have used the South Hall," said Moya Phelleps, senior vice presi‐ dent for membership services, NMA. "Traditionally, MINExpo took place in the North and Central Halls, along with some outdoor space. Now we have South Halls Nos. 3 and 4." Read‐ ers might recall the Silver Lot in the front of the convention center was 24 ROCKproducts • AUGUST 2012 off‐limits because of construction in 2008. All of that space will be used this year. For people who decide to begin their MINExpo 2012 experience at the South Hall, full service registration will be available, Phelleps explained. "We also will have a business center for the South Hall with meeting rooms that can be reserved in 30 minute increments," Phelleps said. "We are excited that a large number of universities have decided to ex‐ hibit at MINExpo, and we have grouped them together in an area just outside the South Hall. The North Hall will remain the same, with full registration there. The International Business Center will be located on the second floor of the North Hall." The NMA will provide a shuttle serv‐ ice from the MINExpo hotels to the North and South Halls. An intra‐expo‐ sition shuttle service will also oper‐ ate at the convention center. Delegates staying at the Las Vegas Cat MD5150 Hotel Hilton, the closest hotel to the convention center, will depart from the east tower and arrive at the North Hall first and then the South Hall. Del‐ egates at the North Hall will take the same shuttle from the North Hall to the South Hall. The NMA will be using new digital tools to help delegates plan and nav‐ igate MINExpo 2012. MINExpo has a Facebook page and is tweeting on Twitter. An online show directory is currently being developed, Phelleps explained, which will go live at the end of July. The directory is search‐ able by name and equipment, and will remain active for a year after the show. "During 2008, we had a similar online directory, but it was fairly basic," Phelleps said. "The 2012 online directory will be much more extensive." A MINExpo 2012 app will be avail‐ able in mid‐August. The app will in‐ clude the online directory along with the schedule for the technical pro‐
