Although the drive of choice for quarry conveyors has been the external mounted motor and gear box, the drum motor has been gaining popularity due to the all enclosed design that protects all vital components such as the electric motor, gear reducer and bearings, from the environment. Any mechanical equipment that is used in a quarry has to withstand harsh, abrasive and dusty conditions. Abrasive dust ultimately finds its way into the air ducts of the elec- tric motor, cutting the airflow substantially, which causes the motor to overheat resulting in a complete motor failure. It also penetrates the bearing, seals, couplings and other mechanical conveyor components, creating conveyor failure, which results in loss of production. The Van der Graaf motorized drum is designed to address all the above points of failure. The extreme duty series drum motor for aggregate use features an all-enclosed design. Bearings, electric motor and all gear reducer components are inside the drive drum (head pulley) working in an oil bath that ensures optimum lubrication and longevity that averages four times the life of a standard external motor/ gear box drive arrangement. Since all bearings are housed inside the drum there is no need for maintenance, such as re-greasing the bearings, noted the company. The Van der Graaf drum motor features standard class "H" inverter duty motor windings for extreme duty applications, and the VPI (Vacuum Pressure Impregnation) process protects the motor under high vibration conditions. The inline design of the motor and gear reducer results in a 96 percent mechanically efficient conveyor drive that saves an average of 30 percent on the electrical consumption. Van der Graaf, Thompson Pump Introduces Remote-Operated RECON Control Panel Thompson Pump's new RECON2000T control panel with enhanced functions using interactive technology allows for remote pump control and monitoring, and reduces the time and labor needed on-site. The innovative control panel allows users to operate the pump and supervise performance from a smartphone, laptop, desktop computer or any other device with Internet access. Thompson Pump debuted the control panel at this year's ConExpo-Con/Agg show in Las Vegas with daily live demos showcasing the new technology, including a live video feed of a Thompson pump thousands of miles away in Port Orange, Fla., being controlled by the panel. Convention attendees were amazed at how seamlessly the control panel worked and how the interactive technology allowed them to access data from a remote location. "We're thrilled with the response we're getting from the RECON2000T," said Bobby Zitzka, sales manager for Thomp- son Pump. "We launched this new panel to meet the changing needs of our customers. Thompson Pump works tirelessly to stay at the forefront of technology. This is another example of our commitment to be the industry's best." The RECON2000T utilizes cellular and satellite networks for a secure and reliable connection in even the most remote locations, and also comes Wi-Fi ready. It gives operators informational access and control over the pump unit with the ability to remotely monitor the unit, record data and vary speed. The dashboard displays all the same pump and engine data as it appears on the RECON2000T control panel on-site. If there's a problem with the pump or engine, the RECON2000T can even be setup to notify the user on their Internet-activated device.
