ployee's situation that has nothing to do with work directly. As much as we would like our employees to leave their personal issues at home, that is not possible. We all bring our personal issues to work, and they can affect our performance on the job. If you feel you are "over your head," refer the employee to appro‐ priate resources inside or outside the company. An effective coach has an array of tools that they use when necessary. Your job, as a coach and manager, is to develop people and make sure their performance is at a high level. Coaching your employees to a high performance that is fulfilling, may be the most important thing you ever do at work. E Use Motivation to Replace Orders When it comes to maintaining workforce effectiveness and structure, managers often con- fuse motivation with the vocal assertions of "cannot," "will not" and "do not." In fact, posi- tive motivation focuses on sus- taining four primary areas in the workplace: security, fairness and justice, personal fulfillment and individual involvement. When leaders want to increase workforce performance, com- manding and dictating do not produce the same results as motivating individuals. Empow- ered leaders can take several steps to effectively motivate their employees. n Learn everything possible about the personalities of employees. n Apply specific motivational tech- niques with each individual –not general techniques for all. n Establish a definite relationship between motivation and personal enhancement. n Apply motivational techniques consistently. n Demonstrate the motivational factors of cooperation, determi- nation and persistence along with the feeling of success in daily personal actions.
