Sierra Frac Sand Relies on Transportation Logistics for Success Sierra Frac Sand LLC, Tatum, Texas, realizes that logis‐ tics plays an important role for a frac sand producer. Timely loading and precise delivery are critical factors in ensuring that product is delivered to drilling opera‐ tions in an efficient manner. The company employs a diversified strategy that uti‐ lizes truck, rail and barge options. Trucks are loaded to customer specified weights using belt scales (1 percent weight variability) before proceeding to standardized truck scales, recertified every six months. Sierra boasts both BNSF and Union Pacific rail options. The BNSF spur located in Tatum, Texas, can currently operate 23 cars, with plans for constructing a 100‐car spur under review. The UP‐served spur located in nearby Henderson, Texas, (referred to as the Hender‐ son‐Overton Branch, or HOB) has well over a 100 car. The company's Tatum facility is conveniently located within trucking distance of several main markets, in‐ cluding Haynesville, Cotton Valley, Tuscalusa Marine, Eagle Ford, Wolf Camp and Wolf Berry Woodward, and Fayetteville shale plays. Trucking is readily available through Kim R. Smith Trucking Inc. a subsidiary of Sierra Frac Sand, or otherwise contracted out through its existing transportation network. Barging can also be made an option out of Shreveport, La., approximately 80 miles from the Tatum facility. While not the preferred method, this option enables the company to move large volumes long distances, to South America or other international locations. Chieftain Sand and Proppant Gets Capital Investor Energy Capital Partners announced the completion of a recapitalization of Chieftain Sand and Proppant, LLC. Chieftain Sand is a growing producer of frac sand that meets strict technical specifications for use in the oil and gas industry. The growing demand for frac sand is driven by tech‐ nology advancements in the hydraulic fracturing process that allows hydrocarbon extraction from for‐ mations where oil and gas exists but previously could not be brought economically to the surface, including the Eagle Ford Shale, the Bakken, as well as new strata in the Permian Basin and other established fields. The majority of all domestic oil and gas drilling and development utilize frac sand, and it is also used to improve recoveries in existing producing wells. Chieftain Sand owns and operates two frac sand pro‐ duction plants in Wisconsin and Arkansas. The com‐ pany recently commissioned its new production facility in western Wisconsin where the geologic re‐ source yields the highest grade and most favorable particle size distribution for the specific frac sand products needed for oil and liquids‐rich production. "We are excited to become Chieftain Sand's capital partner and fund its proven ability to serve the exact‐ ing and demanding requirements of the supply chains of the largest oil field services companies with the highest quality product and low‐cost logistics capabil‐ ities," said Energy Capital Partner's Nazar Massouh. "Our partnership with Energy Capital will provide Chieftain Sand with access to capital and a long‐term strategic partner who can support our growth plan," commented David Hanson, Chieftain Sand's CEO. www.rockproducts.com ROCKproducts • OCTOBER 2012 17
